MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Hours before firing Manchester United ahead against Valencia in the Champions Cup, Irish midfielder Roy Keane ended six months of transfer speculation on Wednesday by signing a new contract with the Reds to dash Juventus' hopes of hiring him.

The tough-tackling Keane would have been available to offers from January 1. But, after taking his time over negotiations, he has signed a contract reportedly worth 50,000 pounds (US$80,000) a week to stay at Old Trafford through 2003.

Juventus was among a group of wealty European clubs willing to pay big money for the talented 28-year-old midfielder whose goal against Valencia was his ninth of the season.

The deal makes him the best player in English soccer and may put pressure on the strict wage structure operated by the club.

"I think everybody will be pleased after being sick reading about it all," he said about his protracted negotiations with the club. "I'm delighted about it. I am always patient and didn't want to sign anything that wasn't right. Tonight it's all over.

"People were questioning me, saying that I would leave the club but I have said from day one my priority was to stay with Manchester United."
