Former Russian international striker Oleg Salenko has been released from his contract at Spanish Second Division club Cordoba.

Salenko, who was joint leading scorer at the 1994 World Cup, was signed earlier this season but has struggled to keep a regular place because of injury problems.

'Salenko is a great player,' said the club in a statement, 'but an urgent need for strikers has brought agreement to rescind his contract.'

GOALKEEPER BAHIA UNDERGOES KNEE SURGERY

Porto goalkeeper Vitor Bahia has had an operation to repair a broken cartilage in his right knee.

The Portuguese international keeper, who has been a key figure in Porto's successful campaign in the European Champions League so far this season, is expected to be out of action for around a month.

The surgery is well timed as the Champions League does not play again until March while the Portuguese League is suspended over the Christmas period.

FIFA DATABASE FOR WORLD CUP TICKETS

People buying tickets for the 2002 World Cup from an official outlet will have their details entered into a database in an effort to reduce the problems caused by the black market.

FIFA vice-president David Wills, head of the ticketing sub-committee, said: 'We will have the name and address of every person who buys four tickets on a database. While it doesn't remove black market concerns it restricts them.'

The sport's governing body hopes to have the strategy in place by March.

PETIT HITS OUT AT ANTI-FRENCH BIAS

French international midfielder Emmanuel Petit has attacked the English authorities over the punishment meted out to compatriot Patrick Viera.

The Arsenal player told journalists that the six-match ban and $70,000 fine - for spitting at West Ham defender Neil Ruddock - was over the top.

'I am amazed how stupid officials can be and am outraged at the punishment on Patrick,' said Petit. 'It is simple-minded, anti-French bias and seems to be part of a scheme to wind us up.'

GERMANY

  • Czech international striker Pavel Kuka will miss his club VfB Stuttgart's final three games before the Bundesliga's winter break after undergoing knee surgery.
  • The $1m transfer of striker Rikhardur Dadason from Norwegian side Viking Stavanger to SV Hamburg has been finalised and he moves on 1 January.

    ENGLAND

  • Premiership side Leicester have completed a club record $4m signing of forward Darren Eadie from First Division team Norwich City.
