Real Madrid settles for 1-1 tie against Racing

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Angel Vivar scored in the 83rd minute to give lowly Racing de Santander a 1-1 tie against Real Madrid on Sunday, denying the Spanish powerhouse a much-needed win and leaving it in 15th place. The draw means Real Madrid has won only one of its last 13 games and only three of its 15 matches so far this season. It boasts a mere 17 points, although the one from Sunday's game does raise it two spots from 17th place in the standings. Still, with a record of 3-8-4 Real is off to its worst start ever in Spanish league play. Playing in Santander, Raul Gonzalez put Real Madrid on the board in the 24th minute with a chip shot from a meter out after goalie Jose Ceballos failed to control a corner kick by Roberto Carlos. Real dominated much of the first half against the league's 13th-placed team but failed to score again. Neither side had the upper hand in the second period, which was played under a pouring rain, although several times Racing came close to equalizing. With just minutes to go, Vivar recovered a ball that had been stopped by goalie Iker Casillas after a shot by Salvador Ballesta, and knocked it in. In other action, Deportivo la Coruna remained atop the league with 33 points and a record of 10-3-2 after downing Real Sociedad1-1. Second-place Celta kept its position with a 1-1 tie against Athletic Bilbao. Celta is now five points behind Deportivo. In Saturday's only match, last-place Seville upset FC Barcelona 3-2, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes. Barcelona dropped from fourth to sixth place after suffering its fifth loss in six games. Elsewhere Sunday it was Rayo Vallecano 4, Malaga 1; Alaves 2, Betis 0; Espanyol 1, Valladolid 1; Zaragoza 3, Numancia 3; Mallorc 1, Oviedo 1; and Atletico Madrid 1, Valencia 2. Match details Rayo Vallecano 4, Malaga 1 Rayo Vallecano snapped a four-game losing streak with a rout of lowly Malaga. Jon Perez, nicknamed Bolo, put the home team on the board in the 19th minute but Enrique da Silva, known as Catanha, equalized six minutes later. Jean Francois Hernandez made it 2-1 in the 37th, and Rayo padded its margin in the last 10 minutes with goals from Carlos Llorens and Manolo Canabal. Zaragoza 3, Numancia 3 In a nip-and-tuck battle, Zaragoza tied the game three times to earn a draw against Numancia and stay in third place. Ruben Navarro scored twice for Numancia and Jorge Gonzalez twice for Zaragoza. Navarro drew first blood in the 29th minute dribbling past two defenders and slamming the ball home with his left foot. Gonzalez tied it in the 44th, but Numancia made it 2-1 four minutes later on a goal from Romanian Constantin Barbu. After Gonzalez tied the game at two in the 69th minute, Navarro made it 3-2 in the 73rd with a powerful kick from the edge of the area after a pass from Perico Ojeda. Zaraoza tied the game once and for all in the 79th on a goal from Martin Vellisca after a centering pass from Carlos Cuartero. Real Sociedad 0, Deportivo la Coruna 1 The game's only score was an own-goal in the 36th minute by Jose Felix Guerrero. Alaves 2, Betis 0 Alaves scored twice in the first half, with goals from Bosnian Meho Codro in the 21st and a penalty converted by Javier Moreno in the 46th. Espanyol 1, Valladolid 1 Espanyol scored first on a penalty converted by Constantin Galca in the 44th minute, but Valladolid tied it in injury time on a goal by Brazilian Rodrigo. Celta 1, Athletic Bilbao 1 Mario Turdo scored for Celta in the 42nd as Gustavo Lopez made a coner kick that was headed by Alexander Mostovoi and stopped by goalie Imanol Etxeberria. Turdo knocked it in from close range. Mallorca 1, Oviedo 1 After a scoreless first half, Oviedo got on the board first in the 62nd minute as Panamanian Dely Valdes took a pass from Juan Gonzalez and scored. But Mallorca tied it five minutes later on a goal from Diego Tristan on a pass by Ariel Ibagaza. Atletico Madrid 1, Valencia 2 Valencia scored in the 16th minute on a goal from Gaizka Mendieta after a pass from Gerard Lopez. Atletico tied it on a goal by Jimmy Hasselbaink after a pass by Juan Carlos in the 28th. But Valencia clinched it with a score by Juan Sanchez in the 53rd. Those expelled for Valencia were Lopez and Amadeo Carboni in the 72nd for drawing two yellow cards, and in the 87 Claudio Lopez for a red card. In Saturday's game, FC Barcelona was upset 3-2 by last-place Seville. Juan Carlos Gomez scored twice and Victor Fernandez added the gam-winner in the 87th minute. It was Seville's first victory in seven rounds and only its second all season.
