LONDON (AP) -- Everton of the Premier League and first-division Sheffield United avoided monumental upsets Tuesday in third-round replays of the FA Cup.

Nicky Barmby scored in the 85th minute as Everton defeated third-division Exeter 1-0. Barmby, playing before a tiny crowd of only 16,000, scored on a sharp-angle shot after Everton dominated the match throughout but was unable to crack Exeter's stout defense.

Sheffield United defeated non-league Rushden and Diamonds 6-5 on penalties after the match was 0-0 after regulation and 1-1 after 30 minutes of extra time. Shaun Derry gave Sheffield a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of extra time but Ray Warburton equalized two minutes later.

After both teams scored their first five penalties after 30 minutes of extra time, John Brady's shot was saved by Sheffield United goalkeeper Simon Tracey with Marcus Bent then converting the decisive penalty for United.

All but one of the third-round matches Tuesday were replays after draws. In the only non-replay, first-division Bolton 1-0 won at home over Cardiff on a 29th-minute strike by Eidur Gudjohnsen before only 5,000.

In other matches, Fulham got three goals in six minutes -- two from Barry Hayles -- as Fulham won 3-0 at Luton. Plymouth won 1-0 at home on Micky Heathcote's goal in the 88th.

Queens Park Rangers won 3-2 at Torquay on two goals by Stuart Wardley.

Two third-round replays were postponed because of a frozen pitch: Gillingham vs. Walsall, Oxford United vs. Nottingham Forest.
