Italian Serie A leaders Lazio are determined to continue in their bid to sign European Footballer of the Year Rivaldo from Spanish side Barcelona. Last week the Roman club were ready to spend a world record $62.4 million for the Brazilian forward, who has fallen out with Barca boss Louis Van Gaal. 'I am waiting for a sign from Barcelona that a deal is possible,' said Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti, who told Italian paper Corriere dello Sport that he plans an official bid in January.

FINAL INSPECTION BEFORE NATIONS CUP

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will visit Ghana and Nigeria early next month for a final look at stadium and television facilities ahead of the African Nations Cup finals. The late inspection follows complaints from several broadcasters last month over the state of preparations for filming the 16-team competition. CAF will send an inspection team of organising committee members and television rights holders before the tournament begins on 22 January.

BORDEAUX SIGN PARTIZAN'S TOMIC

French champions Bordeaux have taken advantage of Partizan Belgrade's winter sale by signing versatile Yugoslav midfield star Djordje Tomic. Tomic was adamant he wanted to leave after a row with coach Miodrag Jesic which cost him his first team place. Club officials said at the start of the winter break they were prepared to let their best players go for the right money. Forward Mateja Kezman could be next to leave _ Lazio are said to have offered $25 million for his services.

PENEV NAMED BULGARIAN COACH OF CENTURY

Dimitar Penev, who led Bulgaria to the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup and masterminded their sole appearance at the European Championship finals in 1996, has been voted his country's coach of the century. Penev also won three Bulgarian titles and three Cups as coach of CSKA Sofia between 1985 and 1990, and took them to the European Cup semi-finals in 1989.

  • Levski Sofia midfielder Alexander Alexandrov has been voted Bulgaria's player of the year.

MOLLER NIELSEN SET TO TAKE ISRAELI JOB

Former Danish coach Richard Moller Nielsen travelled to Tel Aviv on Monday for talks with Israeli football officials with a view to filling the country's vacant national team job. 'I don't know exactly what we are going to talk about,' said Moller. 'But if they offer me a two-year deal with reasonable financial conditions I will go without any doubt.' Moller Nielsen guided Denmark to victory at the European Championship in 1992, remaining in charge until 1996.

    BECKHAM DOUBTFUL FOR SUNDERLAND CLASH

Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson has admitted midfielder David Beckham could miss Tuesday's game at Sunderland because of a hamstring injury. Ferguson still hopes Beckham, who missed Sunday's 4-0 win over Bradford, will make the trip, but said: 'We will have to wait and see. His hamstring is a bit tight and we have to be careful.' However Ferguson is more optimistic that Ryan Giggs will be back in action after shaking off the flu which ruled him out of Sunday's game.

    MAGATH NAMED EINTRACHT FRANKFURT COACH

Former German international Felix Magath has been installed as coach of Eintracht Frankfurt, currently second-from-bottom of the Bundesliga. Eintracht sacked supremo Joerg Berger on 19 December after a string of six successive defeats left them with just 11 points from 17 games at the start of the winter break. The 46-year-old Magath, whose contract runs to the end of the season, resigned as coach at Werder Bremen last May after home defeat by Eintracht.
