(CNN text) -- Belgian international Emile Mpenza has signed for Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in a $9.1m deal, the second highest transfer in German league history. Schalke 04 manager Rudi Assauer is gambling that the arrival of the 21 year-old striker from Standard Liege will lift his side from their current standing of 10th. As part of the deal another Belgian striker Michael Goosens, 26, goes back to Standard Liege, where he had played between 1990 and 1994.
GREGORY TIPS LEEDS TO STAY AT THE TOP
Aston Villa coach John Gregory believes Leeds - his team's opponents on Monday - will avoid the experiences he endured last season. Twelve months ago Villa were riding high at the top of the English Premier League before they fell away badly. David O'Leary's men are now the surprise pacemakers but Gregory said: 'Leeds are top on merit. They are a very hard side, very tough to beat and I cannot see them being out of the top three or four all season'.
KAISERSLAUTERN SET TO SIGN YAKIN
German Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern have lined up Swiss international Murat Yakin of Turkish side Fenerbahce in a likely three-year deal. 'We have sent an official request to Fenerbahce,' confirmed Kaiserslautern managing director Gerhard Herzog saying they were hopeful of completing the signing of the 25-year-old defender. Yakin joined Fenerbahce from another German club VfB Stuttgart in the summer of 1998 but has played only rarely in the first team.
RANDOM DOPE TESTS PLANNED AT EURO 2000
Football's world governing body FIFA are planning to stage random dope tests at this summer's Euro 2000 finals. FIFA president Blatter revealed the move in the German football magazine Kicker, saying that they were hoping for UEFA's agreement to the tests as part of an aggressive fight to stamp out drugs from football. 'Surprise controls during training will be carried out under the supervision of a German expert,' Blatter is quoted as saying in the magazine.
