FIFA Club World Championship hosts Vasco da Gama warmed up for the inaugural event which starts on Wednesday by routing Algeria 7-0 in a friendly in Rio.

Donizete scored two of the goals as Vasco swaggered through the match as if it was a training ground exercise.

The Brazilians have been named by Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United's biggest rivals for the title. The European champions begin their campaign on Thursday, while Real Madrid open the tournament against Mexicans Necaxa.

DUMAS EXPECTED TO JOIN MARSEILLE

Newcastle defender Franck Dumas is poised to sign a three-year contract with French First Division Marseille.

Sports director Marcel Dib said the 31-year-old former Monaco player and Newcastle had agreed to a transfer estimated at 10 million francs (US$1.8 million).

Dumas will have medical checks in Marseille before leaving the English Premiership club, Dib added. He will be Marseille's third recruit during the winter break.

ILIE RETURNS AFTER GOING MISSING

Adrian Ilie has returned to training at Spanish club Valencia, braving the wrath of coach Hector Cuper after going missing for four days.

The Romanian international striker was due to report back on 30 December but failed to show up.

"I have talked to the player and things are clear, although I still cannot understand why he went missing. It's a waste of his talent," said Cuper. "The priorities of this team will always be more important than any person's ego."

FORMER KYIV CAPTAIN KOLOTOV DIES

Viktor Kolotov, who captained Dynamo Kyiv to their first European Cup Winners' Cup victory in 1975, has died from a heart attack at the age of 50.

Kolotov played 218 matches and scored 62 goals during his 11 seasons with the club, earning five Soviet titles with the Ukraine's best side.

He won 53 caps for the Soviet national team and defied USSR officials in 1969 when he decided to move to Dynamo Kyiv. That decision cost him a one-year suspension.
