VENICE, Italy (AP) -- Unheralded Venezia battled Fiorentina to a 0-0 draw Tuesday night in an Italian Cup qurterfinal first-leg match played on a frozen field.

Neither club had much success in attack, with the temperature hovering around zero degrees Celsius (32 F) and about 500 spectators at Penzo Stadium.

The hosts threatened in the 13th minute, but midfielder Runar Berg's header slammed off the right post with Fiorentina 'keeper Francesco Toldo beaten.

Venezia striker Filippo Maniero wasted two good chances early in the second half. Unmarked in the 50th minute, the veteran sent a header wide of the far post. Four minutes later, Toldo held Maniero's powerful header off a corner kick.

An offsides call erased an apparent winning goal for Champions League participant Fiorentina in the 55th, when Enrico Chiesa headed home a cross from Portuguese playmaker Rui Costa.

Venezia, which stands 16th in the 18-team Serie A standings, beat Fiorentina 2-1 in league action on Saturday.

In the three other quarterfinal first-leg games, played last week, Cagliari, Serie A's last-place club, upset AS Roma 1-0; Juventus edged Lazio 3-2 in a battle between the league's top two clubs, and Internazionale of Milan beat cross-city rival AC Milan 3-2.

All four return legs are slated for next week.
