Leaders Deportivo back on winning trail

BARCELONA (Reuters) -- Leader Deportivo Coruna recovered its winning touch with a 2-0 home victory over Real Betis on Saturday and now has a five-point lead at the top.

Deportivo had taken just one point from its previous four league games, and it made a jittery start.

But a classy Pauleta Resendes strike settled its nerves three minutes before halftime. The Portuguese forward controlled a long ball forward into the penalty area, turned inside one defender and slid the ball past Betis keeper Toni Prats.

Betis, missing its two creative forward players Denilson and Finidi George, rarely looked likely to respond as it persisted in sending up high balls for Alfonso Perez to chase.

Deportivo dominated the second half but took until injury time to add to its lead, Roy Makaay stabbing in from close range after a lucky deflection gave him a clear chance.

Second-placed Real Zaragoza can close the gap to two points if it wins at Real Oviedo on Sunday. Barcelona, in third place a point behind Zaragoza, host Racing Santander.
