Barcelona keep heat on leaders with Rivaldo goal

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Striker Rivaldo scored 18 minutes into play to give Barcelona a 1-0 win over Racing de Santander, lifting the team to second place Sunday in the Spanish first division.

Barcelona, with 37 points and an 11-4-6 record, passed ahead of Zaragoza, which has 35 points and a 9-8-4 record following a 1-0 loss to Oviedo.

Deportivo de La Coruna, playing its 21st-round match against Betis Saturday, won 2-0 to break a four-game losing streak and stay league leader with 40 points from a 12-4-5 record.

Rivaldo became Barcelona's top scorer Sunday with nine goals. The Brazilian striker, who received the Golden Ball for European soccer player of the year moments before Sunday's match, is tipped to win FIFA player of the year Monday.

In other matches Sunday, former league powerhouse Real Madrid battled to a 0-0 draw against Numancia and fell to 12th position in the 20-team division with 27 points.

Numancia moved up to No. 9 with 28 points. However, Real Madrid has two games in hand due to league scheduling.

Other 21st-round results were: Mallorca 2, Rayo Vallecano 1; Sevilla 0, Celta 1; Valencia 1, Espanyol 2; Malaga 0, Alaves 1; Athletic de Bilbao 1, Valladolid 0; and Atletico de Madrid 1, Real Sociedad 1.

Valencia 1, Espanyol 2

Espanyol won 2-1 against Valencia with a goal by Miguel Angel Benitez Pavon 16 minutes into the match and another in the 50th minute by Moises Arteaga Garcia. Valencia's only scorer was Kily Gonzalez, 29 minutes into the game.

Espanyol now has 26 points. Valencia stays with 27.

Sevilla 0, Celta 1

Celta de Vigo's South African striker Benny McCarthy scored in the 83rd minute to down Sevilla 1-0. Celta has 35 points, and is in fourth place 11-2-8 record and behind Zaragoza on goal difference.

Athletic de Bilbao 1, Valladolid 0

Carlos Garcia of Athletic Bilbao scored in the 18th minute to improve Bilbaos record to 8-8-5 with 32 points. The side now lies No. 5. while Valladolid stays in the lower reaches with 24 points.

Mallorca 2, Rayo Vallecano 1

Mallorca beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 with a 21st-minute goal by Mallorca's David Castero Escudero and a 90th-minute strike by forward Diego Tristan Herrera. Manolo Canabal scored for Rayo Vallecano in the 68th minute.

The defeat drops Rayo to No. 7 with 30 points. Mallorca is one spot behind with 29.

Malaga 0, Alaves 1

Alaves' Jorge Azkoitia Babiola scored in the third minute for a 1-0 win to shift the Basque side to No. 6 with 32 points while Malaga is at No. 11 with 27.
