Co-hosts bounced Ten-man South Africa tops Ghana, heads to semisPosted: Sunday February 06, 2000 05:26 PM
KUMASI, Ghana (AP) -- Siyabonga Nomvete's first-half goal gave ten-man South Africa a hard-fought 1-0 win against co-host Ghana in the quarterfinal of the African Nations Cup on Sunday. Nomvete leapt unmarked in the 42nd minute to head in a superb cross by Shaun Bartlett from wide on the right, and despite the sending off of Eric Tinkler early in the second half, South Africa looked a class above the Black Stars. Bafana Bafana's lead was well-deserved. Ghana badly missed the midfield industry of the injured Alex Nyarko and its defense was often run ragged. Nomvete should have scored in the 30th minute but was wayward in his finihing after more good running from Bartlett, and he missed another golden opportunity just after Tinkler's dismissal when clean through on goalkeeper Richard Kingston. Ghana was looking to avenge a 2-0 defeat in the semifinal of the 1996 African Nations Cup, and its hopes got a boost three minutes into the second half when midfield grafter Tinkler received his second yellow card for a trip on Kwame Ayew. There was confusion when Tunisian referee Mourad Daami realized that he had left all his yellow cards in the locker room at half-time, but Tinkler duly was given his marching orders. The dismissal initially inspired Ghana. Ayew immediately hit the crossbar with a header, but Bafana Bafana, with Lucas Radebe outstanding at the heart defense, was rarely troubled in the second half. South Africa, continental champion in 1996 and runner-up two years later, faces Nigeria or Senegal in the semifinals. Lineups: Ghana: Richard Kingston; Eben Dugbartey, Emmanuel Kuffour (Ohene Kennedy, 70th), Samuel Johnson, Samuel Kuffour; Christian Gyan, Mark Edusei, Charles Akunnor (Stephen Appiah, 53rd), Kwame Aew; Yaw Preko, Otto Addo (Peter Ofori-Quaye, 46th). South Africa: Andre Arendse; Lucas Radebe, Mark Fish, Pierre Issa; Quinton Fortune, Eric Tinkler, Dumisa Ngobe, Siybonga Nomvete (Pollen Ndhlanya, 85th), Helman Mkhalele; John Moshoeu, Shaun Bartlett.
