German roundup Sand scores twice to lead Schalke past Bremen 3-1Posted: Tuesday February 08, 2000 10:56 PM
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Danish striker Ebbe Sand scored two goals to lead Schalke to a 3-1 victory over Werder Bremen in Bundesliga action Tuesday. With most of the top clubs playing Wednesday, including a showdown between leader Bayern Munich and second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, in other matches it was: Hertha Berlin 2, Arminia Bielefeld 0; Ulm 3, 1860 Munich 0; Kaiserslautern 2, Hansa Rostock 2. Schalke took an early lead when Sand connected on a good cross from Unal Alpugan and headed unchallenged past Bremen goalkeeper Frank Rost in the sixth minute. With Schalke dominating the game, Sand was foiled by Rost in the 33rd. Bremen launched a quick move on the left side and Ailton, the Brazilian striker, rounded a Schalke defender and goalkeeper Oliver Reck to slot home the equalizer in the 33rd. Less than a full minute into the second half-time, Schalke regained the lead through its two Belgian forwards. A splendid through ball by Marc Wilmots beat the offside trap and sent Emile Lokonda Mpenza racing toward the Bremen goal. Mpenza, Bundesliga's most expensive player, displayed outstanding control by chipping the ball over the advancing Rost, sprinting past the Bremen goalkeeper and scoring into the empty net for his first goal since joining Schalke on a $8.5 million transfer during the winter break. Rost made a diving one-handed save a few minutes later to deflect Mpenza's shot from close range. The injury-weakened Bremen did not surrender and Ailton shot high from three meters (yards) out off a cross from Claudio Pizarro. In a fast-paced match, Rost spoiled a good performance by fumbling a cross and allowing Sand to headin his 11th goal of the season to seal Schalke's second straight victory. In Ulm, the home team scored two quick goals at the start of the game, with Oliver Otto driving home from 23 yards in the fourth minute and Dutch forward Hans van der Haar adding the second in the 14th. Rainer Scharinger completed Ulm's victory in the 73rd. Both Bremen and Munich could slip from their fourth and fifth place, respectively, when the 19th round is completed Wednesday. Munich has now lost two straight. Hansa Rostock also got off to a quick start in Kaiserslautern, going ahead in the 11th minute through Swedish striker Magnus Arvidsson. Kaiserslautern coach Otto Rehhagel shuffled his lineup in the second half, leaving French World Cup start Youri Djorkaeff surprisingly on the bench. And in the 73rd, Nigerian striker Victor Agali made it 2-0 for the visitors. But Kaiserslautern stormed back with two goals inside two minutes to level the score. Joergen Pettersson cut the gap in the 85th and Slobodan Komljenovic notched the equalizer in the 86th. In Berlin, striker Bruno Labbadia missed two excellent opportunities as the bottom-placed Bundesliga team surprised one of the two German Champions League survivors with an attack-minded game. Against the run of play, Berlin went ahead in the 51st, Michael Preetz latching onto a pass by Dariusz Wosz to score his second goal in as many games. In the 75th, he got his seventh goal of the season to make it 2-0 and end Arminia's hopes of recording an upset.
