LONDON (AP) -- Playing without David Beckham -- cut from Sunday's 16-man team after missing practice Friday -- Manchester United still defeated Leeds 1-0 on Andy Cole's' 52nd-minute goal to push its league lead to six points.

In the FA Cup quarterfinals, Newcastle won 3-2 at first-division Tranmere, Chelsea beat second-division Gillingham 5-0, and Aston Villa won 2-1 at Everton. Bolton clinched the fourth spot on Saturday.

In Sunday's semifinal draw, Bolton faces Villa and Newcastle was picked against Chelsea. The games will be played April 2 and April 9 at Wembley stadium.

Man United's win on Cole's 100th goal for the club improved the defending champions to 56 points followed by Leeds (50), Liverpool (47), Arsenal (44) and Chelsea (43).

Cole scored his 18th of the season after a through ball from Paul Scholes. He lifted the pass spectacularly over defender Lucas Radebe and then beat fellow England international Nigel Martyn in the Leeds goal.

Leeds missed its best chance to score about 10 minutes from the finish when Lee Bowyer fired a five-yard shot over the crossbar with an empty net facing him.

The 24-year-old Beckham, who has been rumored to be leaving the English champions, is reported to have had a run-in with manager Alex Ferguson on Saturday after missing Friday practice. Married last summer to Spice Girl Victoria Adams, he was reported angry he missed her modeling debut Wednesday in London.

"It's just one of those things," Ferguson said. "All things will be dealt with by the cub. In this situation I didn't pick David. It's a matter of picking the team. I have the privilege of picking the team."

When asked if Beckman would be back to play next Saturday at Wimbledon, Ferguson said: "It's possible."

In Sunday's FA Cup quarterfinals, Gary Speed, Didier Domi and Duncan Ferguson scored for Newcastle and Gary Jones and Wayne Allison scored for Tranmere. The Magpies are trying to reach their third straigh final after losing the previous two.

Chelsea, the '97 FA Cup champions, got goals from Tore Andre Flo, John Terry, George Weah, Jody Morris and Gianfranco Zola on a penalty its 5-0 win of Gillingham.

Villa won 2-1 at Everton as Benito Carbone scored the winner in first-half injury time. Steve Stone opened for Villa in the 16th and American Joe-Max Moore equalized in the 20th. It was the red-hot Moore's fourth goal in four games and his fifth in six since joining the team two months ago.

On Saturay, first-division Bolton became the first to reach the FA Cup semifinals, beating Charlton 1-0 on Eidur Gudjohnsen's 47th-minute goal. Bolton, which played in the first English FA Cup final played at Wembley stadium 77 years ago, has a chance to reach the last final this spring before the landmark stadium is demolished to make way for a new one.

The Wanderers beat West Ham United in that first Wembley final in 1923.

In Saturday's only Premier League game, Middlesbrough won 2-0 at home over Coventry to move seven points clear of the relegation zone on first-half goals by Gianluca Festa and Hamilton Ricard.

In England's first division on Saturday, Ipswich won 2-1 at Crewe leaving Ipswich unbeaten in 17 matches. No.2 Ipswich improved to 63 points behind leader Chartlon's 68.

Manchester City dropped to third with 63 points with the day off. Barnsley held fourth with a goal on a penalty in second-half injury time by Craig Hignett for a 1-1 home draw with Queens Park Rangers. Barnsley has 57 points.

Birmingham continued its climb and moved into fifth place with a lopsided 4-1 win at Swindon with goals from Darren Purse, Isaiah Rankin, Dele Adebola and Martin Grainger.

In the day's whitewash in England, Sheffield United destroyed first-division rival West Brom 6-0. Marcus Bent scored three with the others from Paul Devlin, Alex Notman and Michael Brown. WestBrom's Richard Sneekes was sent off in the 38th on a red card.
