World Soccer Headlines Sunderland's Phillips signs five-year dealPosted: Thursday March 16, 2000 03:59 PM
(CNNSI.com) -- England striker Kevin Phillips has signed a new five-year contract with English Premier League club Sunderland. Phillips is the Premier League's top scorer this season with 24 goals and is expected to be part of the England squad for Euro 2000. Sunderland manager Peter Reid said four other players had also signed new deals: Danish international goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, defender Chris Makin, and midfielders Gavin McCann and Alex Rae. SCIFO COMPLETES CHARLEROI TAKEOVER A group headed by veteran Belgian midfielder Enzo Scifo has taken control of Charleroi, currently third from bottom in the Belgian League. The 'Scifo Group's' first move was to replace coach Raymond Mommens with Manu Ferrera, currently in charge of Anderlecht's youth squad. Mommens will stay on as sporting director. Scifo himself will not be able to take an active part in the new set-up until the end of the season, when his contract with Anderlecht ends. HITZFELD CRITICISES CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has criticised the new format of the European Champions League. Hitzfeld said there had been little interest in the second league phase introduced this season. 'That second phase is one too many.' said the Bayern coach. 'It should be suppressed and replaced with a round of 16. Instead of 17 games we would have 13, and the competition would be more attractive.' UEFA TO INVESTIGATE SCHOLL YELLOW CARD UEFA has announced that it will hold an inquiry into the deliberate provocation of a yellow card by Bayern Munich's Mehmet Scholl in their Champions League win over Rosenborg. Scholl took his shirt off in front of the referee after team-mate Paulo Sergio had converted a penalty. It was Scholl's third booking and means he will miss next week's game against Dynamo Kiev, but will be free to play in the quarter-finals, with Bayern having already clinched their place. GERARD TO QUIT AS COACH AS OFI CRETE After 15 years at the helm of OFI Crete, Dutch coach Eugene Gerard has announced that he will resign at the end of the season for health reasons. Gerard, 60, who underwent a heart operation last year, holds the record in Greece for the longest coaching stint with the same team. He joined OFI from Dutch club Roda in 1985 and under his guidance the Cretan club won the Greek Cup in 1987 and they also qualified for the UEFA Cup four times. NEWS IN BRIEF
