Just barely Real Madrid advances with 1-0 victoryPosted: Wednesday March 22, 2000 06:06 PM
TRONDHEIM, Norway (AP) -- Midfielder Raul scored an early goal and seven-time champion Real Madrid squeezed into the Champions League quarterfinals with a 1-0 win Wednesday night against Rosenborg. Raul scored the game-winner with only three minutes gone in the match, played before only 12,653 fans at Lerkendal Stadium. After picking up a pass on the left flank, Raul fired a low shot from 13 meters (14 yards) to the left of Rosenborg goalie Arni Gautur Arason. Real played defensive soccer the rest of the way trying to protect the lead, but it was Steve McManaman who nearly put the Spanish team two up with five minutes left of the first half when his 13-meter strike hit the post and bounced out. John Carew, Rosenborg's talented striker who's been chased by several European top clubs, nearly tied the score one minute before halftime, but Real goalie Iker Casillas made the stop at point-blank range. Carew wasted three excellent scoring chances after the break as the Norwegians pressed hard for an equalizer. Real played much of the second half with 10 men as Guti was sent off in the 53rd minute with his second yellow card in the match. Real Madrid made the last eight with Bayern Munich, which had already clinched a quarterfinal berth in group C going into the final group matches. Rosenborg made the quarterfinals last year, but the Norwegian champions finished last in its group this time with only one point in six games. The Trondheim side started with a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich before losing its next five games. Real Madrid was missing striker Fernando Morientes, who injured a thigh muscle during training Tuesday. Real's injured veteran defender Manolo Sanchis and suspended forward Nicolas Anelka also missed the game. For Jahn Ivar "Mini" Jacobsen, the veteran midfielder who played for Norway in both the 1994 and 1998 World Cup finals, it was last game of his career. The 34-year-old, who made his national team debut in 1988 when he also started for Rosenborg, left the field in the 69th minute and was replaced by Morten Knutsen. Jacobsen played nearly 300 games for Rosenborg and also had stints with foreign club teams.
