On the ropes Canada falls to Honduras 2-0 in Olympic qualifyingPosted: Sunday April 23, 2000 06:34 PM
HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) -- Hesler Phillips and Luis Ramirez each scored goals as Honduras posted a 2-0 victory over Canada in an Olympic qualifying game Sunday. With the victory, Honduras (1-1) kept alive its hopes of advancing to the semifinal round of the six-team tournament of Under-23 teams, which will send its top two finishers to the Sydney Games. Canada (0-1), which was making its first appearance in the preliminary round, will play the United States on Tuesday night. The U.S. blanked Honduras 3-0 on Friday. The Canadians must defeat the U.S. and score at least three goals to move from Group D into Friday night's semifinal round. Phillips gave Honduras a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when his shot from about 10 yards out flicked off a Canadian defender and soared over goalkeeper Mike Franks.
Canadian left fullback Jason Mathot was sent off for hitting Honduras' Elvis Danilo Turcios in the face with about 15 minutes remaining. Canada had a great chance to tie the game in the 90th minute, but Kevin McKenna's header off a Jim Brennan free kick smacked the underside of the crossbar, dropped to the goal line and bounced away. Moments later, in stoppage time, Ramirez tacked on an insurance goal to seal it for Honduras. In Group E on Sunday, Mexico and Guatemala played to a 1-1 draw. Mexico's goal was scored by Joaquin Beltran in the 43rd minute, and Guatemala equalized 10 minutes before time with a goal by Freddy Garcia.
