World Soccer Headlines Hagi backs Romania to win Euro 2000Posted: Wednesday May 31, 2000 01:32 PM
Romania's veteran midfielder Gheorghe Hagi believes the 22-man squad named by coach Emeric Ienei for Euro 2000 is good enough to win the competition. "Romania's squad has huge potential and this makes me and my teammates believe we could play right up to the end," said the Galatasaray star. Squad: Stelea, Lobont, Prunea, Contra, Popescu, Belodedici, Ciobotariu, Chivu, Filipescu, Petrescu, Petre, Hagi, Galca, Haldan, Linkar, Munteanu, Rosu, Lupescu, Ganea, Mutu, Moldovan, Ilie. NEW DEAL SECURES EINTRACHT'S FUTURE Eintracht Frankfurt has signed a $14 million five-year deal with the USA sports marketing firm Octagon Worldwide, thereby securing its license to play in the Bundesliga. The German Football Federation, which fined the club last season for financial irregularities and deducted two points, had given the club until the end of May to find a backer. Without the necessary cash to fill its gaping coffers, Eintracht would have been forced into Division Two. COURBIS TAKES THE REINS AT LENS Rolland Courbis, who resigned from his job at Marseille last November, has signed a one-year contract to coach French First Division rivals Lens. During the course of his career, Courbis has always had one-year deals, normally with an option to renew. In his 29 months at Marseille, he imposed his strong personality and managed to bring through a number of good young players in Stephane Dalmat, Peter Luccin and William Gallas. FERENCVAROS HIRES EX-HUNGARY COACH CSANK Ferencvaros of Budapest has appointed former Hungarian national boss Janos Csank as its new coach. Csank, who has just guided Videoton to the Second Division title, has signed a one-year contract. He replaces Croatian Stanko Poklepovic under whom Ferencvaros finished a lackluster fifth last season. "A Ferencvaros coach either goes to heaven or lands in hell, there is no middle way," Csank said.
