Mexican combo Report: Sanchez, reinforced Pumas to play in U.S. CupPosted: Thursday June 01, 2000 11:34 AM
MEXICO (AP) -- Former Mexican international Hugo Sanchez will bring his Pumas club side reinforced with a handful of other players to comprise the Mexican national team at the U.S. Cup starting this weekend, local media reported Wednesday. The move to send the bolstered Pumas side is the latest twist in an issue that has had the Mexican Football Federation negotiating with the U.S. Soccer Federation, which has a signed contract with the MFF for the full national team. USSF spokesman Jim Moorhouse on Wednesday said the U.S. federation had not yet received a roster from the Mexican federation nor would it confirm that Sanchez, rather than regular Mexican national team manager Manuel Lapuente, would be the coach. Sanchez reportedly has asked for Chivas' Paolo Cesar Chavez, Daniel Osorno and Juan Pablo Rodriguez of Atlas, Oscar Mascorro of Toros Neza, Gilberto Jimenez of Puebla, Los Angeles Galaxy forward Luis Hernandez and Tigres goalkeeper Jorge Campos to supplement his Pumas team, which qualified for the Mexican league playoffs. The Mexican team has been scheduled to arrive Friday in Chicago for Sunday's match against Ireland. The United States opens its annual four-team exhibition tournament on Saturday against South Africa. The tournament lasts through June 11. The Mexican federation earlier this week said it was in no position to send a full national team, with the league season having just ended and the championship final between Toluca and Santos scheduled for Saturday. Additionally, America is still competing in the Copa Libertadores semifinals. The Mexican federation had asked that the U.S. Cup be postponed until later in June, but with that apparently rejected by the USSF, Mexican league president Segun Lebrija said late Tuesday that the USSF had accepted a substitute "combination" national team.
