BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) -- River Plate hammered Chacarita Juniors 5-0 at the weekend to go three points clear in the Argentine Clausura (Closing) championship as rivals Independiente and San Lorenzo both slipped up.

River Plate had not lost to Chacarita since 1978, a record that never looked like being broken as the "Millonaires" cruised to victory with two goals by Eduardo Coudet and one each from Pablo Aimar, Colombian Juan Pablo Angel and Hernan Diaz.

Independiente, who had led River Plate on goal difference at the start of the weekend, went down to a shock 3-2 home defeat by provincial team Colon, while San Lorenzo were beaten 1-0 away at Velez Sarsfield.

Independiente and San Lorenzo have two matches left, while River has three games still to play.

South American champions Boca Juniors were beaten 2-1 at Gimnasia-La Plata after their coach Gregorio Perez had resigned shortly before the match.

The club said Perez would be replaced by Timoteo Griguol, the man he had replaced at the start of the season.

The Clausura is the second of the two championships in the Argentine season.
