NEW YORK (AP) -- Zambia beat Togo 2-0 Saturday in African regional qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, ending a three-game losing slide.

At Lusaka, Zambia, Harry Milinzi's goal put the hosts ahead in the 25th minute and substitute Chaswe Nsofwer scored in 68th, two minutes after entering the match.

Zambia improved to 1-1 in Group A; Togo is 0-1.

Meanwhile in Tunis, Tunisia advanced to the top of its group by beating Madagascar 1-0 at home on Saturday in Africa's 2002 World Cup qualifying tournament.

The sole goal was scored by striker Zoubeir Beya, who plays for Fribourg in Germany's first division.

The North Africans, World Cup finalists in 1998, are now top of Group D, replacing the Ivory Coast.

Tunisia started sluggishly and seemed unable to break through Madagascar's defense. Their lackluster attempts at a goal only earned them whistles of derision from the 10,000 spectators.

But the expulsion of Tunisia's Hassene Gasi in the 38th minute, after getting a second yellow card for protesting to the referee, injected new life into the depleted team of Italian coach Francesco Scoglio.

Their efforts were rewarded with a first-half injury time goal by Beya, who flicked the ball into the goal with his heel in the 47th minute.

Despite playing 11 men against 10, Madagascar were unable to take the upper hand in the second half.

They came closest to equalizing in the 57th minute when a powerful shot by Hubert Robson from 20 meters (66 feet) left Tunisian goalkeeper Chokri El Ouaer powerless. But the ball hit the crossbar.

Later Saturday, Ghana played Sierra Leone in Group B.

The winners of each of Africa's five five-country groupings will qualify for the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.
