Nine Uruguayan National Team Players Travel To Italy

Posted: Fri February 23, 2001 at 3:07 p.m. EST

MONTEVIDEO (EFE) - Nine Uruguayan national team members traveled to Milan on Friday to join their 13 teammates on European teams to play several friendly matches prior to the March 28 World Cup qualifier match against Paraguay.

Uruguay will play against the Slovenian national team on Feb. 28 and against Juventus in Italy on March 7.

Coach Victor Pua replaced Argentine Daniel Passarella, who resigned Tuesday after coaching the team for 19 months and earning $1 million a year, the highest salary ever paid to a coach in the country's history.

During a stopover in Madrid, the nine players will be joined by trainer Esteban Gesto, who was hired this week in the United States by the Uruguayan Soccer Association.

The group includes five players from Nacional, three from Peqarol, and one from Defensor Sporting.

The Uruguayan national team members who play in Austrian, Spanish and Italian clubs will join them in Milan.

Passarella called up the following lineup, which Pua confirmed:

Goalies: Fabian Carini (Juventus-Italy) and Gustavo Munua (Nacional).

Defenders: Dario Rodriguez (Peqarol), Paolo Montero (Juventus-Italy), Damian Rodriguez (Nacional), Gonzalo Sorondo (Defensor), Gustavo Mendez (Torino-Italy), Diego Lopez (Cagliari-Italy) y Marcelo Romero (Peqarol).

Midfielders: Gustavo Varela (Nacional), Fabian Coelho (Nacional), Fabian O'Neill (Juventus-Italy), Andres Fleurquin (Sturm Graz-Austria), Pablo Garcia (Milano-Italy), Gianni Guigou (Roma-Italy), Nicolas Olivera (Sevilla-Spain), Mario Regueiro (Racing de Santander-Spain).

Forwards: Jose Franco (Peqarol), Vicente Sanchez (Nacional), Dario Silva (Malaga-Spain), Alvaro Recoba (Inter-Italy), Marcelo Zalayeta (Sevilla-Spain).
