Richard Dunne
Man City
Born: 9/21/79
Hometown: Dublin
Dunne is a strapping centre-half whose reputation has grown since joining Everton as a trainee in October 1996. His progress was slowed by a foot injury that he picked up in 1998 during the European Youth championships in Cyprus. He helped the Republic of Ireland to an unexpected triumph in that competition with some sound displays at the heart of an impressive defence. After recovering from injury he fought his way into the Everton first team in 1998/99, but found himself in an unfamiliar role of right-wing-back.He is deceptively quick for a big man and his best position seems to be in central defence. He was again troubled by injury after being selected to represent the Republic at the World Youth championships in Nigeria. This time it was a hamstring injury that prevented him travelling to Africa. It brought an early end to his 1998/99 season. At the beginning of the 2000/2001 season Dunne was linked with a move to first division Wimbledon but the expected transfer fell through.
