| January 1997 saw the addition of Robert Molenaar to the Leeds squad from FC Volendam for £1million.Nicknamed 'The Terminator', the muscular Molenaar added a physical presence to the Leeds defence.He made his debut at home to Leicester in January 1997, going on to partner Lucas Radebe in the starting line-up early in season 1998-99, after being restricted to just 23 league and cup starts in 1997-98.He suffered a similar injury to that of Martin Hiden at Arsenal in December 1998, damaging his cruciate ligament when falling awkwardly.April 1999 saw him re-rupture the ligament, and his injury troubles continued for most of the 1999-2000 season.Although he was back to full fitness the following term, there appeared little prospect of the powerhouse player becoming a first team regular at Elland Road. Molenaar eventually signed for Bradford City and made his Bantams debut on December 2 2000 in the 2-1 home win against Coventry City, having cost the Bantams £500,000 two days previously. City had beaten off a late challenge for his signature from Blackburn Rovers. |
