| Thomas Sorensen |
Sunderland Born: 6/12/76 Hometown: Odense, Denmark |
| Sorensen joined Sunderland from Danish side OB Odense in 1998 and soon established himself as the club's number one goalkeeper. The Wearsiders had to beat off strong competition to sign the Danish Under-21 intenational who was being trailed by a number of top-flight clubs including Manchester United. Sorensen was the heir to Peter Schmeichel throne in the national team, and the Old Trafford legend recommended his understudy to Sir Alex Ferguson. After two trials at Old Trafford Sorensen opted for the Stadium of Light.A tall commanding keeper, Sorensen was outstanding for Sunderland throughout 1998/99 and the following season, when he made 37 league appearances and is very much the number one choice between the sticks.A fully fledged international for Denmark, Sorensen is also poised to be his country's first choice keeper, having played second fiddle for so long to Schmeichel. |
