| Paul Scholes is an attacking central midfield player who can also fill the role of out-and-out striker and is a fine example of Manchester United's renowned youth team policy.He has a good goalscoring record for both club and country and was in particularly brilliant form for England in their 3-0 defeat of Poland in March 1999, achieving a memorable hat-trick.Although he is an established international, Scholes is not assured of a place in United's starting line-up. The champions have a startling array of attacking talent and, for the sake of balance, Scholes is often sacrificed for one of the ball-winning midfielders, such as Nicky Butt.But when given licence he has the happy knack of scoring vital goals and his late equaliser against Inter Milan in the quarter-final of the European Cup was priceless in Manchester United's remarkable treble achievement of 1998-99. Scholes continued the trend and scored a number of goals of high quality, two strikes in particular come to mind during the 1999/2000 season.One at Bradford was a stunning volley from a corner, while the other was an equally brilliant strike at Middlesbrough, but those were just two of nine league goals that highlight Scholes scoring prowess. |
