| Jaap Stam was signed by Alex Ferguson in May 1998 for £10.75million, breaking Manchester United's transfer record.The Dutchman's previous club, PSV Eindhoven, had demanded £15million which was unacceptable to United, but Stam was so intent on moving that he waived his right to a 15 per cent share of the transfer fee and a deal was done.He was player of the year in Holland in 1998 and is a permanent fixture in the Netherlands international side.Stam is a world-class central defender with all the attributes from positional sense and physical strength to an exquisite sense of timing and a turn of pace.He faced many doubters when he arrived at United but after a short period of adjustment he established himself in no uncertain terms and was a vital piece of the jigsaw that saw Manchester United complete the unique treble of Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup in the 1998-99 season.The beginning of season 2000/2001 was disappointing for Stam as he was forced out of vital early term games because of injury. |
