| Liverpool smashed the British transfer record for a goalkeeper when they signed Dutchman Sander Westerveld from Vitesse Arnhem for £4million, beating the previous record of £3.3million that Everton paid Tranmere for Steve Simonsen in 1998.The arrival of Westerveld saw the immediate departure of David James from Anfield to Aston Villa.Westerveld turned down other offers from Europe and UEFA Cup football to join the Reds in June 1999, having been widely tipped for a move to Merseyside well before that.After becoming Gerard Houllier's ninth foreign signing, the big keeper revealed that the price-tag would not trouble him as he attempted to bring some consistency to a leaky Liverpool defence.Just days after completing his record-breaking move, Westerveld earned his first international cap in a 3-0 defeat against Brazil, but still proved himself a capable shot-stopper, while commanding his area, bellowing at defenders in Schmeichel-like fashion.He was an integral part of the Euro 2000 campaign in which Holland unluckily fell to Italy, losing after penalties in a semi final. |
