Sami Hyypia
Liverpool
Born: 10/07/73
Hometown: Porvoo, Finland
Liverpool's frailties in central defence saw boss Gerard Houllier look to re-structure that department and the 6ft 3in Finnish stopper was seen as a key acquisition.Sami Hyypia was signed in July 1999 for £3.25million and the domineering centre-back tightened up a rearguard that had leaked 60 goals in season 1998-99.Hyppia is an experienced international defender and is excellent in the air. His career began with MyPa where he won the Finnish Cup and the 1991 Most Promising Player of the Year. His move to Willem II coincided with the Dutch club reaching the Champions' League for season 1999-2000 but he chose to join the Anfield revolution. The Merseysiders spotted Hyypia rather fortuitously when scouting German players in a match against Finland, but the defender impressed so much in a 0-0 draw that he was pencilled in as a future signing and subsequently became a Liverpool player. His partnership alongside Stephane Henchoz helped the Reds achieve the title of meanest defence in the Premiership during the 1999/2000 season. He has quite simply been a revelation since joining Liverpool.
