David Wetherall
Bradford
Born: 3/14/71
Hometown: Sheffield
Reliable and often under-rated central defender who played a solid part in Leeds United's emergence as a leading Premiership side in the 1990's. A commanding figure at the back, Wetherall is also very dangerous at set-pieces thanks to his aerial power. Captained Leeds when David Hopkin was unavailable in 1997/98.A University graduate, Wetherall joined Leeds from Sheffield Wednesday in 1991 with fellow Owl Jon Newsome. He ultimately went on to better things than Newsome, but with the power of Robert Molenaar, the emergence of England prospect Jonathon Woodgate and the signing of Michael Duberry, Wetherall knew his prospects at Elland Road were bleak.A record fee of £1.4million brought Wetherall to Valley Parade despite offers from Southampton and Huddersfield. His first season with Bradford was outstanding and he became the only outfield player in the Premiership to play every minute of every game in the Premier League.Wetherall was also named as the club's Player-of-The-Year at the end of the 1999/2000 season. A term that ended in dramatic fashion for both the club and the player. Needing to win in the last game of the season at home to Liverpool to have any chance of retaining Premiership status, City won with the only goal of the match being scored from a header by the big centre half.
