| Aston Villa were quick to sign David as a £1.8million replacement for Manchester United-bound Mark Bosnich in June 1999. James had been under scrutiny for the previous two seasons and Liverpool made it perfectly clear that he was no longer in their future plans.Having impressed as a youngster at Watford the big keeper established himself firmly in the England Under-21 set-up, before a big-money move to Anfield. On his day there is no doubting the excellent ability that David possesses. Physically perfect for a goalkeeper he has the height, power and presence to command his penalty area from crosses and dead-ball situations, whilst his pace and agility make him a superbly reactive shot-stopper. However, his much-highlighted catalogue of goofs and clangers led to a loss of confidence and a drop in form as he vied with Brad Friedel for the number one shirt at the club.David believes that his move to Villa will enable him to re-assert himself back in the England fold in the hope that he can add to his solitary cap against Mexico in a 2-0 win in March 1997.He was in Kevin Keegan's original 28 man squad for Euro 2000 but was left behind when the final 22 was announced.A blunder in the FA Cup final against Chelsea by James did not help his cause.Roberto Di Matteo took advantage of a James mistake to score the only goal of the game that handed Chelsea the trophy. |
