| Chris Sutton |
Celtic Born: 3/10/73 Hometown: Nottingham |
| The tall centre-forward arrived at Celtic for £6million in the close season of 2000 in the hope of resurrecting a career that had surprisingly gone off the rails. One of football's enigmas Chris Sutton joined Chelsea in a blaze of publicity during the summer of 1999 having been bought for £10million from relegated Blackburn Rovers and becoming Gianluca Vialli's first British and most expensive recruit.Although he went to Stamford Bridge with just one England cap it was widely anticipated that a transfer to a high profile club would re-establish Sutton as a Premiership striker with many tipping that he would team up with his former Blackburn forward partner Alan Shearer forming a twin striker partnership for England.Unfortunately, that was anything but the case as Sutton failed miserably to win over the Blues fans and eventually became a target for the terrace wags with some indifferent performances.During a miserable first and only season at Chelsea, Sutton scored just three goals during 39 appearances in all competitions and also struggled on the disciplinary front receiving nine yellow cards and one red.A far cry from his early days at Norwich City where, along with his friends and playing colleagues Lee Power and Tim Sherwood he earned rave reviews with an eventual £5million move to Ewood Park.Despite the scathing criticism he received at Stamford Bridge Sutton does possess an exquisite touch for a big man both on the ground and in the air and he is known as a hard working player. His willingness to try his best and never hide in a game no matter what the circumstances have given Sutton at worst a reputation for being an honest professional and one appreciated by his team-mates if not always a favourite with the fans. |
