Davor Suker
West Ham
Born: 1/01/68
Hometown: Osijek, Croatia
Almost a year after costing the Gunners £3.5million from Real Madrid the Croatian international arrived at Upton Park on a free transfer.During his one and only season at Highbury the former winner of the Golden Boot at France 98 scored 11 goals for Arsene Wenger's side in 39 appearances although 24 of those were as a substitute. With the talent of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Kanu in competition for forward roles Suker found it difficult to establish himself as a first team regular with the North London outfit. But he has a terrific playing pedigree and first came to fame with an outstanding performance for Croatia in the World Cup of 1998 when he became the leading scorer in the competition and helped his country to third place. He went into France 98 having already scored 35 goals in 41 appearances for Croatia but his domestic career has been almost type cast as a 'bit' player.During his three years at the Bernabeu with Real Madrid he began with a flurry of goals but eventually became a squad player often left on the substitutes bench. The end of his Spanish stay was signalled by the arrival of John Toshack who was the coach that sold the consistent goal scorer in July 1999. When Suker signed for the Hammers the West Ham manager Harry Redknapp was adamant that Suker would become a crowd favourite.A player that depends on good service he does most of his work in the 18-yard box but has lightning pace and lethal finishing power.
