| Martin Keown |
Arsenal Born: 7/24/66 Hometown: Oxford |
| Keown slipped through Arsenal's youth set-up in the mid 1980s. After starting his career with the Gunners as an apprentice he left for Villa Park in 1986 as a 20-year-old after just 22 games for Arsenal.Keown began to establish a reputation for himself as one of the best man-markers in English football at Aston Villa and Everton. The circle was complete when Keown returned to Highbury in 1993. Despite having to challenge Tony Adams and Steve Bould to get a place in the Arsenal defence Martin has still managed to average about 30 games a season at Highbury.Intermittently capped by England, Keown returned to the England side for the Euro 2000 qualifier against Poland in 1999 and produced an impressive performance.Perhaps his best international displays were shown in Euro 2000 where Keown replaced his injured Arsenal teammate Tony Adams.Even though England were heavily criticised for their performances in the summer competition, Keown was one of the few successes. |
