Ian Walker
Tottenham
Born: 10/31/71
Hometown: Watford
Has had an up and down career, playing for England one season, but then unable to force his way into the Spurs team the next. The son of Mike Walker, the former Norwich and Everton manager, Ian is nearing his tenth anniversary at White Hart Lane. He's made more than 200 League appearances for the club but the 1998/99 seaon was not one of his best as he struggled to hold off the challenge of Norwegian Espen Baardsen. His international career peaked in 1997 when he made three appearances for England. However, after his disappointing performance at Wembley in the 1-0 defeat against Italy in the World Cup qualifier he was dropped from the team. Walker wasn't included in the final 22 for France '98 although he was in the squad for Euro '96.He had trouble with a shoulder injury which he picked up in an FA Cup third round tie with Fulham in 1998 and was then kept out of the first team by Baardsen. When he did return to the side some crucial errors led many to question the wisdom of his selection. However, a more settled period in the Spurs goal under the watchful eye of George Graham silenced the critics and he was recalled to the England squad for the 1999 game against Poland. But inconsistency reared it's ugly head once more during the 1999/2000 season and in the following close season Neil Sullivan was captured from Wimbledon.Sullivan immediately took over the number one spot from Walker, who subsequently asked for a transfer with the realisation that he was going to be second choice to the Scotland international.
