| John Lukic has been a faithful servant of Arsenal and Leeds during a long and distinguished career. His first spell at Highbury began in the summer of 1983, when he soon impressed with his shot-stopping ability and strong physical presence. He became the firm foundation on which the Gunners' outstanding defence was based in the late 1980's.Howard Wilkinson lured Lukic back to Leeds, where he had begun his career in 1978. He won a Championship medal at Elland Road before returning to Arsenal as cover to David Seaman on a free transfer in 1996, since when he has found first-team opportunities hard to come by.Some critics have pointed to his occasional lapses with crosses, most notably at Ibrox when Leeds lost to Rangers in a European tie.Although he didn't make a first team appearance for the Gunners during the 1999/2000 season Lukic was needed the following season.Injuries to David Seaman and Alex Manninger meant that the veteran keeper was needed in both domestic and European competitions, and he didn't let the side down. |
