| The Frenchman was brought into the English game by Ruud Gullit while he was at Chelsea, Charvet outlasting the Dutchman at Stamford Bridge.Although naturally right-footed, Charvet has played across the defence as well as in midfield, even picking up European honours when on-loan with the Blues.Ironically, it was Gullit's predecessor at Newcastle, Kenny Dalglish, who signed Charvet during the summer of 1998 for a bargain price.He received a player of the month award in December 1998 and was one of the few Newcastle players to come out of the 1999 FA Cup final defeat with any credit.At one point it was understood that the formr Chelsea man would be sold but manager Bobby Robson had a change of heart.Manchester City were the club showing most interest and they continue to monitor the players progress. |
