| Steve Watson |
Everton Born: 7/01/74 Hometown: North Shields |
| The England B international is one of those rare gems in football being a utility player genuinely comfortable in a number of positions. He can play at right back, in the midfield or as a centre back although the full back position appears to be his best. The move to Everton in the summer of 2000 came almost two years after Everton boss Walter Smith made an initial enquiry when he tried to sign him from Newcastle in October 1998 only for the transfer to fall through because of the clubs financial plight at the time.As it was Watson signed for Villa in a £4million deal but he was often left on the bench under the management of John Gregory and was also left out of their FA Cup final squad for the game against Chelsea at Wembley.A very composed player the North Shields born player spent almost nine years with Newcastle and it came as a great shock to fans at St James Park when he was allowed to leave the Magpies.Very popular in the North East Watson is comfortable on the ball and he is an excellent reader of the game possessing a superb temperament. |
