| Steve Howey is a classy centre-back whose career has been badly affected by injury.His defensive ability on the ground and in the air, plus the quality of his passing, earned him full International honours.He made his debut for Newcastle in the 1988/89 season, and has become a loyal and widely respected servant of the club.Tynesiders like a defender who can play a bit, even one born in Sunderland, and in Howey they have found a player who is comfortable and capable on the ball, and also strong in the tackle.He has struggled with a long-standing calf injury that became particularly troublesome in 1998/99, and he was forced to spend three weeks at the FA's rehabilitation centre at Lilleshall.His return to fitness and form was much welcomed by manager Ruud Gullit in November 1998, and he signed a new four-year contract two months later.But injury struck again in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final against Spurs, when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. |
