Dion Dublin
Aston Villa
Born: 4/22/69
Hometown: Leicester
A prolific goalscorer and targetman, big Dion is every bit as effective in a destructive role with some outstanding displays in the centre of defence when called upon. A journeyman striker who came up through the lower leagues with Cambridge before a disastrous episode at Manchester United. A broken leg curtailed his two-season Old Trafford career and he switched to Coventry after being dubbed a flop.It was no surprise when this strong-minded, dedicated pro bounced back to silence the critics with season after season of impressive performances and double-figure goal tallies despite the Sky Blues' relegation dogfights. Dion deservedly forced his way into the England set-up prior to France 98 and was deemed a little unlucky not to make the final World Cup squad. His arrival at Villa was nothing short of sensational with nine goals in his first seven games, although the rest of season 1998/99 was interrupted by injury. He had to undergo knee and hernia operations but there was worse to follow. An horrendous head injury in an accidental collision with Sheffield Wednesday striker Gerald Sibon in December 1999 led to a fractured skull for the powerful striker, and at one stage the injury looked to be career threatening. The clash was almost freakish with Dublin running headlong into a virtually stationary Sibon.Thankfully, after a four-month lay-off the popular striker returned to action before the end of the season.
