Gary Walsh
Bradford
Born: 3/21/68
Hometown: Wigan
Gary Walsh was at last tasting regular first-team football after struggling to establish himself at Old Trafford and Middlesbrough before he was cruelly hit with a knee injury while at Bradford. In a decade with Manchester United he made just 50 League appearances and was twice loaned out to Airdrie and Oldham to gain first-team experience. He did play in the Nou Camp against Barcelona in a European campaign but was generally second fiddle to Peter Schmeichel. At Middlesbrough Walsh was in and out of the side. After originally going to Valley Parade on loan, the move was made permanent when he kept four clean sheets in five games.Spectacular, agile and commanding, Walsh has inspired confidence in the Bradford rearguard. He was voted the club's Player of the Season in 1997/98, his first season with the Bantams. After playing a major role in City's first visit to the top flight in 77-years Walsh was rocked by a knee injury sustained in a Premiership game against Leicester City in the autumn of the 1999/2000 season.Following a couple of operations the reliable keeper missed the rest of the campaign and only began full-time training in the close season before the 2000/2001 season. However, Walsh regained his first team place for the game at Newcastle on December 16, replacing the dropped Matt Clarke just several weeks after coming back from a brief loan spell at Middlesbrough.
