| At the time of his signing from Charlton, in the close season of 1996, Lee Bowyer became Britain's most expensive teenager at £2.6million.He began promisingly and scored on his debut at Derby on the opening day of the 1996/97 season.A strong, ambitious competitor, Bowyer also possesses superb stamina and has excellent technical ability.He joined the England Under-21 squad and scored two well-taken goals in a win against Poland.Bowyer also impressed at club level to such an extent that he was noticed by Glenn Hoddle, who called the midfielder up to join the senior squad to play in several friendlies.His third season at Elland Road, 1998/99, proved to be even better, stringing together some fine performances in the centre of the park and finishing the campaign with a goal tally of nine in all competitions.Football wise things went even better the season after, but off the field problems left the player, who was ready to stake his place in the full England side, unable to do so because of a forthcoming court appearance. |
