| Jim Smith has signed Deon Burton twice. When Smith was at Portsmouth he bought Burton as a 16-year-old trainee, and in 1997 brought him to Derby in a £1million move.Burton has been used primarily as a squad player at Pride Park, but he has the distinction of being the top scorer in the France 98 qualifying camapign when representing Jamaica. He was voted Jamaica's Sports Personality of the Year in 1997.Burton has explosive pace and an eye for goal but has never really established himself as a first-choice striker. After a particularly poor start to the 1998/99 season he was loaned to first division Barnsley. On his return to the Rams he showed much improved form, and scored several key goals in the last few weeks of the season.During the 1999/2000 season it was a case of once again playing only a 'bit' part in the first team but Burton remains something of an enigma. |
