Alex Manninger
Arsenal
Born: 6/04/77
Hometown: Salzburg
An Austrian Under-21 international goalkeeper who has proved to be a more than capable deputy for David Seaman.Originally signed from Cazino Salzburg in 1997 to bolster the Highbury goalkeeping ranks, Manninger soon jumped in front of John Lukic, Vince Bartram and Lee Harper in the Arsenal pecking order. In 1997/98 he stood in for the injured Seaman on 16 occasions, keeping seven clean sheets in the process, including one at Manchester United.Such outstanding performances did much to help win Arsenal the 'double'. He also won an FA Cup winner's medal as a non-playing substitute in the 1998 win against Newcastle United.Called upon more infrequently in 1998/99, Manninger was still able to produce some competent performances when called upon. He looks to be a real star of the future.During the 1999/2000 season Manninger played 23 games for Arsenal in all competitions which was 13 matches more than the previous term. But despite some impressive performances between the sticks he has not managed to oust England international keeper Seaman.
