| One of the most skilful, colourful and eccentric players in the Premiership. There is always an air of excitement, expectation and uncertainty when Paulo is on the ball with even his team-mates unsure what he is going to do next. Paulo can engineer himself into an impossible position with nowhere to go. However when defenders lunge in with a tackle they often find the elusive Costan Rican has got away and is bearing down on goal.Signed by Derby from Heridiano in March 1997 the Costa Rican international is tall and athletic with wonderful individual skills. He had a marvellous first season in 1997/98 scoring 20 goals.He wasn't so prolific in 1998/99 with his previous season striking partner Dean Sturridge in and out of form and Derby making constant changes up-front.He signed for West Ham in July 1999 but found it difficult to settle at Upton Park and took a fair bit of stick from the Hammers fans.One year after signing for West Ham, Wanchope joined Manchester City for just over £3.65million despite a late bid from Bradford City that the player rejected. |
