| Michael Owen is the young superstar of English football, following his stunning displays in France 98.After coming off the bench, he scored the equaliser against Romania. He went one step further against Argentina, scoring the goal of the tournament, taking on and destroying two defenders before burying his shot from 15 yards. He then showed his nerve by netting in the penalty shoot-out.A few weeks earlier he had become England's youngest ever scorer, when notching against Morocco.At Anfield his much-vaunted partnership with Robbie Fowler has been a stop-start affair due to injuries to both men, but the potential is there for all to see.Owen possesses devastating pace and the coolness of a true marksman. He can finish with either foot and despite missing much of the 1998-99 season with a hamstring complaint, finished as joint topscorer in the Premiership, with 18 goals, including four against Nottingham Forest at Anfield.Owen suffered more prolonged hamstring trouble in 1999-2000.He took some time to recover, but the following term was back to his best, and scored the equaliser for England in the 1-1 draw against France in a friendly match played in September at Stade de France. |
