Celestine Babayaro
Chelsea
Born: 8/29/78
Hometown: Kaduna
Baba made his name in Nigeria’s Under-17 World Cup winning side in 1993, aged only 15. His performances attracted the attention of Belgian side Anderlecht and he spent three seasons in Brussels, making 78 league appearances. Chelsea snapped him up in June 1997 for over £2million. His first season was blighted by injury, he was sidelined until October and then out from early December until the end of the season. He recovered in time to make Nigeria’s World Cup squad for France '98 and featured in three of Nigeria’s four games. His rapport with Graeme Le Saux gives Chelsea plenty of options on the left-hand side, as both can play at full-back or in midfield and subsequently dovetail well together.During the 1999/2000 season there was, on one occasion, a late return from international duty by Babayaro that caused some consternation in the Chelsea camp. But with Le Saux being injured Baba made the left back spot his own in the absence of the England defender.
