| Ed de Goey |
Chelsea Born: 12/20/66 Hometown: Gouda |
| The giant Dutch keeper started his career at Sparta Rotterdam in 1985 and moved across town to Feyenoord in 1990. He went on to become first-choice for Holland and was their No.1 at the World Cup in USA 94, but was an unused member of the squad four years later at France 98, being replaced by Edwin van der Saar.Ed signed for the Blues in June 1997 for £2.25million and he soon displaced Russian international Dmitri Kharine between the posts. After a shaky start he has impressed most watchers with safe handling and a strong command of his area, largely due to his 6ft 5’’ inch frame, helping Chelsea to their run of successes. With Kharine having left for Celtic, De Goey is left as the undisputed top stopper at the Bridge. He had an excellent 1999/2000 season that ended with selection for his country in Euro 2000. Although Holland were disappointed not to make the final of the competition the Chelsea keeper had a good tournament from a personal point of view. |
