| Jimmy Floyd Hasslbaink became Chelsea's first signing of the close season in June 2000.A £15million fee was paid to Atletico Madrid while the player was given a five-year-deal that ended weeks of speculation surrounding the future of the Dutch born striker.A number of top European clubs were interested in capturing the strong running forward with a trio of Spanish clubs including Deportivo, Real Madrid and Valencia all vying with Italian giants Lazio for a player who eventually decided on Stamford Bridge.Hasselbaink originally exploded on to the English scene under Leeds manager George Graham in 1997 and scored 22 goals in 33 appearances in his first season at Elland Road.He won the Supporters Player-of-the-Year award that season and followed up with another successful term the following season scoring 19 goals in 36 appearances before leaving West Yorkshire for sunny Spain and a £12million move to Atletico Madrid.Despite having personal success in Spain with Atletico his club side struggled badly and the powerfully built forward who possesses a fierce shot was on his way back to England. |
