Paul Ince
Middlesbrough
Born: 10/21/67
Hometown: Ilford
Paul Ince, the self-proclaimed 'guvnor' of English football, has shone as a combative and influential midfielder throughout the 1990s.From the outset Ince has been no stranger to controversy. His £1million switch to Manchester United in 1989 caused uproar among West Ham fans who were furious he paraded in a United shirt before the transfer was completed. And then, having risen to international prominence and become one of the most complete midfielders in the English game, he was duly sold to Inter Milan after Alex Ferguson believed Ince had got too big for his boots.A successful two-year spell in Italy came to an end in 1997 when Liverpool tempted him back to the Premiership. But, despite producing some typically wholehearted performances, his arrival didn't prove to be the missing piece in the Liverpool jigsaw, as the Reds continued to endure disappointing seasons by their standards. An acrimonious split seemed inevitable and that duly arrived as Gerard Houllier began his Anfield revolution.A summer move to Middlesbrough in 1999 has re-charged the old batteries and with Ince approaching the twilight of his career, his performances for the Riverside club have immediately endeared him to the Teesside crowd.
