| Paul Jones |
Southampton Born: 4/19/67 Hometown: Chirk |
| The goalkeeper began his playing career with Kidderminster Harriers before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1991.Five seasons at Molineux yielded only 33 League appearances and Jones was snapped up by Stockport County. Season 1996/97 was amazingly successful for both the keeper and the club, as stunning performances led to Welsh international recognition as well as promotion to division one.It was little surprise when Jones became the first signing of his managerial namesake, David, following him to Southampton in a £1.5million deal involving Lee Todd in July 1997.His Premiership debut saw a 1-0 defeat at The Dell against Bolton on 9 August 1997. Yet after a tentative start, the ever-present Jones enjoyed a rewarding first season in the top-flight capped with The Saints' Player of the Year Award.Season 1998/99 proved less successful as he found himself picking the ball out of the net on 58 occasions, including a 7-1 defeat at Anfield.Season 1999/2000 witnessed Jones have a relatively successful term playing in 31 league games but the following season he was left out by manager Glenn Hoddle after a run of bad form.Jones was recalled amid rumours of a move for another keeper. |
